A demonstration against racism this weekend has been given the green light by police.The Bermuda Police Service said organisers have been given permission to hold the march tomorrow, despite Covid-19 restrictions.Chief Inspector Jerome Laws, who will be in charge of the police operation for the event, said: “The organisers have stated this will be a peaceful protest and that antisocial behaviour, violence, or damage will not be tolerated by protesters and if necessary they will ask the police to intervene. We are working with our partners in the City of Hamilton to make this a safe event for all, including the protesters, onlookers and members of the public who are going about their daily routine.”Mr Laws added: “We advise members of the public who will be attending the area of the protest that there will be traffic disruptions during the march and road users are to consider alternative routes whilst travelling in the city.” A BPS spokesman said parish constables and traffic police would assist at the event. He added it was expected that up to 1,000 people would congregate on Front Street at the No 1 Car Park before the march departed from the Birdcage at 12.45pm.The march will travel along Queen Street, Church Street, Court Street and back along Front Street to the Birdcage.The demonstration is expected to last for three hours and participants have been urged to wear masks and maintain social-distancing.The protest was organised in the wake of the death of George Floyd, who died after he was arrested by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last week.Mr Floyd’s death sparked global demonstrations against racism and police brutality.
