Young Achievers: Erin to study history at Cambridge

History buff: Bermuda High School graduate Erin Jones has prepared herself to attend the University of Cambridge

A graduate from the Bermuda High School for Girls is biding her time to go to a prestigious university in Britain next year.Erin Jones, 18, said that she hopes to study history at the University of Cambridge in the autumn as long as she stays on top of her grades. She added that she planned to coach Bermudian schoolchildren on how to become acceptable candidates for other prestigious schools once she attends Cambridge.Ms Jones said: “I know there are so many capable students in Bermuda who don’t think it’s an option or that it’s really hard.Ms Jones continued: “Yes, it’s a really competitive university, but it’s very doable — you don’t have to be this genius or have crazy extracurriculars.”She added: “If you’re a good student, you try hard and you’re interested in your subject you do have a shot.”Ms Jones, from Southampton, said that she applied to the university’s history programme at the behest of her history teacher. She added she believed that her interview, where she discussed the Salem witch trials and the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, solidified her position at Cambridge.Ms Jones explained: “Cambridge is interested in what you’ve done to read about your subject outside of the school curriculum.“I had done just that and I was able to talk about things that were really out of the norm and that showed that I really was interested. I was able to show that I had done unique research on something that I was interested in and I hadn’t just done Hitler’s foreign policy like a lot of people usually do.”Ms Jones said that she received her acceptance e-mail during school in February and felt “overwhelmingly happy”.She said: “I was just sitting alone in a classroom waiting for my French teacher. I opened the e-mail, it said ‘congratulations’ and I just thought ‘oh my goodness, this is the most amazing moment of my life’.”Ms Jones added: “I just feel really grateful that I’ve been given this chance because I know that I got in, but there were also so many people who were equally as talented who also applied, so I’m very grateful.Ms Jones said that she had to maintain her expected final grade of 41 out of 45 in the International Baccalaureate programme to take up her spot at Cambridge. She added that she plans to attend law school after she earns her bachelor’s degree and one day work at the European Union.
