A heartbroken mother pleaded with the public yesterday to reveal information about what happened to her son on the eighth anniversary of his disappearance.Madeline Rampersad made the emotional appeal so that her family can find peace after 41-year-old Rudy Smith went missing on July 9, 2012.She said: “We haven’t heard too much about Rudy’s case, so here I am today pleading with the public to help out — if they know something, say something.“I think it’s been long enough that I have been going through this. I have been going through this for eight years now and it’s heartbreaking not to know where your son is.”Mr Smith was last seen in the Deepdale area of Pembroke.The motorcycle he was riding was later found in the water off North Shore Road near Grace Methodist Church in the same parish.Police announced a month later that his disappearance was being treated as a murder investigation.Ms Rampersad said: “It’s affecting me, every day I have to live with it.“My mama, she died with a broken heart not knowing where Rudy is.“I know there’s people in the community that know about Rudy. They should come forward and say what they know.”She added: “God knows, he saw it and he knows who they are. You can run but you can’t hide and I’m praying one day that I will get the closure that I need.”Detective Sergeant Jason Smith explained yesterday that several witnesses were interviewed about the case “very recently”.He added that the investigation was “at a very critical stage”.Mr Smith said: “However, today on his anniversary, is a time that we would like to remind the public that we are continuing our inquiries and that we do still need your help.”He added: “His family are still grieving.”The detective said: “There are some members of the community that are reluctant to come forward — it’s something that we encounter on a regular basis with members of our community.“My message to those persons is ... come and talk to us first, there are certain avenues and there are certain resources within the police service that can assist those witnesses and that can also go towards allaying fears.” He added: “With your assistance we can get across that line and we can bring some closure to Rudy’s family.”Mr Smith explained that a cash reward for information leading to the location of the missing man was “under consideration”.He said: “We are pursuing that as we speak, to be able to raise some funds.”
