The global pandemic has cancelled many activities for teens — but the summer does not have to be a washout. The TLC Group, a cybersecurity and data protection firm, has set up a virtual camp to give youngsters a taste of different careers. Glynnis Swan, the camp co-ordinator, said: “With employment opportunities at an all-time low and summer camps cutting off registration at the age of 12, many teens will spend the summer with a lot of time on their hands.”During the Virtual Summer for Teens: Career Taster Camp, young professionals from different fields will talk to schoolchildren aged 13 to 17 about their experiences, and lead fun activities related to each career.The camp will offer seven different strands — business and marketing with a focus on careers in general business, marketing and finance, sports and nutrition, with a focus on careers in professional athletics, personal training and culinary arts.Each session will be one hour a day, so there will still be time for visits to the beach and hanging out with friends.Camp organisers said all the options had been popular. Ms Swan said the professionals involved were keen to share their experience and advice to inspire Bermuda’s young people.She added: “They are passionate about showing support and encouraging the next generation to consider careers at 13 to 17 years so they can prepare for the next steps while in high school.“It’s beautiful to see their commitment to the young people.”Speakers will be Bermuda football captain Danté Leverock, nail specialist and salon owner Keely Trott of NBK, make-up artist Myah Ballentine of beatbymyahv, dance entertainer Kaiias-Gianni Clarke.Also participating will be culinary specialist Kalen Mills, professional artist Becca Martin, accounting and auditing professional Shonte Campbell, playwright Marissa Trott, personal trainer, small business owner and coach Tashae Simmons, and Kairo Morton a specialist in artificial intelligence and machine learning.There are also global course leaders in business administration and management, cybersecurity, app development and programming and coding.Teens will earn a certificate on completion of each career track.Camp organisers said this could be a great addition to résumés or college and scholarship applications. The camp will run from August 3 to 21. Each track is $130 and includes a one-hour Zoom session with a professional, and a fun activity each week for three weeks.All sessions will be held in the morning and discounted rates are available for the purchase of multiple career tracks.• There will be a free information session about the camp today at noon.
