Work will start next month to upgrade three junctions on Front Street.The City of Hamilton said new traffic lights would be installed and sidewalks would be refurbished at the intersections.A spokeswoman said: “The City has already completed numerous major junction upgrades on Court Street and North Hamilton in an effort to make the City more safe for pedestrians and motorists.“The new traffic lights utilise the smart Scoot system, designed to monitor and adjust traffic flow at peak times.”Work will start at the junction of Bermudiana Road and Front Street before moving on to the intersection with Par-la-Ville Road.It will finish at the pedestrian crossing outside of the ferry terminal.The project is expected to be completed by the end of November, weather permitting.Charles Waters, assistant City engineer, explained: “These upgrades are essential to our infrastructure to ensure a high degree of safety and efficiency in Hamilton. “We remain committed to budgeting and executing projects that keep Hamilton modern and competitive in a global market with high expectations.”The use of temporary traffic lights is expected to minimise the impact on traffic flow while the work is carried out.Some parking bays will be affected but the spokeswoman said that “priority will be placed on maintaining public parking and reducing pedestrian impact”.She added: “Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution in the areas when work begins. “Temporary traffic signal equipment, signage and diversions will be in place.”
