Man, 31, drowns after dockside accident

A 31-year-old man died last night after he plunged off the dockside in Hamilton and hit his head on a berthed party boat before he landed in the water.A police spokesman said the man had got off the pleasure craft Zara, which was berthed on Front Street, but fell, hit his head off the stern of the boat and went under. Crew members of a Bermuda Coastguard patrol boat and private divers joined in a rescue attempt and the man was pulled from the water unconscious and then given CPR.The man, understood to have been an expatriate worker, was rushed by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but was pronouced dead just after arrival.The tragedy happened at about 5.30pm and police announced just after 9pm that the man had died despite the efforts to save him.The spokesman said no further information would be released at present.He appealed for witnesses or for anyone with information to contact the police.
