Seniors lead way in voting

The first day of advance polling in the General Election went ahead yesterday at four locations around the island.Tenia Woolridge, the Parliamentary Registrar, said that 1,538 votes were cast.She thanked voters who followed social-media posts or visited the office’s website to catch a last-minute polling station change, switching Horticultural Hall in the Botanical Gardens for St Paul AME Church Hall in Hamilton.Ms Woolridge said she was “extremely pleased” after two votes were cast with the new Tactile Audio Device voting system for the visually impaired.She added: “We are the first in the world to use this system during a major General Election.”Ms Woolridge said staff reported an increase in seniors opting for advanced polling, with “numerous” applications to visit residences of voters unable to leave home.Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier, said last night that ballots would be secured by the Parliamentary Registrar’s office until after the October 1 vote.
