Island trek raised funds for scholarship

Raising funds and awareness: participants who took part in the 14th annual Bermuda trek from Somerset Bridge to the Swizzle Inn

A trek that raises money for Bermuda students attending Georgia State University, Atlanta, has been held for the 14 years.

About 50 participants tackled the walk from Somerset Bridge to the Swizzle Inn.

The annual Bermuda Trek also brings attention to the relationship between Bermuda College and Georgia State University. There are currently 16 students from Bermuda attending GSU, the majority are enrolled in the Robinson College of Business.

Kyle Adams, senior partner and head of financial lines at JLT, said: “Graduates from the programmes at GSU have been highly successful at finding career path employment in the insurance and financial sectors. Most of them are working in Bermuda and we know at least one in London.”

The trek is sponsored by JLT, McGriff, Siebels & Williams, Willis Towers Watson, and supported by Allied World Assurance Company.

The event benefits the Georgia State University Risk Management Foundation Bermuda Scholarship Fund, which provides grants to Bermudians enrolled in the risk management and insurance programmes.

In addition, Bermuda College has an articulation agreement with Georgia State allowing students with at least 60 credit hours and a 3.0 grade point average to transfer to Georgia State’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business in Atlanta and pay tuition at instate Georgia rates.

The Risk Management Foundation partners with the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies and the Association of Bermuda International Companies to co-ordinate resources for students.

Details about the programme can be found on the Bermuda College website. The GSU Bermuda Scholarship Fund information can be found at bermudascholarships.com.
