Hamilton Insurance Group will be inviting applications next month for a scholarship designed to expand the skill set of Bermudians or permanent resident’s certificate holders considering a career in insurance.

The award, called The Hamilton Scholarship, is valued at $25,000 a year for up to two years of final undergraduate study at an accredited educational institution. The scholarship is managed by Hamilton’s Community Giving Committee.

“Our industry is rapidly evolving as it responds to the demands and expectations of the digital age,” said Hamilton Re associate legal counsel and committee member David Amaro.

Mr Amaro is overseeing the application process.

“We know that innovation and creativity are becoming table stakes to remaining relevant in today’s marketplace.

“Like other industries, we’re realising that the skills traditionally developed for a career in insurance aren’t going to be enough to build a workforce that thinks and executes creatively. In fact, many of the world’s most effective leaders studied subjects like history or philosophy before they embarked on a career in business.

“Hamilton is proud of the diverse set of talents and backgrounds of our employees. In addition to actuaries and underwriters, we have computer scientists, software developers, and HR and communications professionals on our team. Many of these employees didn’t study risk management or underwriting, but they make a meaningful difference at our young company.

“We want to help create a pool of talented young people who will contribute to Bermuda’s competitiveness as a world-class international business centre. We feel our scholarship, with its broadened study focus, will help to do just that.”

Dominick Wright, one of the students who participated in the Hamilton Re intern programme in November is now a full-time employee.

The application form for The Hamilton Scholarship can be found on the Hamilton Group’s website.

Applications will be accepted as of February 15, with a closing date of April 30.
