Jackson hits hat-trick for Mariners

Apryl Jackson scored a hat-trick of tries as Mariners thrashed Police 42-5 in the women’s league at North Field, National Sports Centre, at the weekend.

Lysmierei Santana Suazo added two tries with singles scores from Deneka Borden, Karly Alleyne and Naya Heylieger. Gena Newson kicked a conversion. Etienne Coetzee notched a try for Police.

Rachel Jenkins scored a pair of tries for Renegades in their 10-5 win over Teachers. Najee Pitt-Clarke bagged a try for the losing side.

In the men’s league, Renegades sent an ominous warning to the other clubs with a controlled performance as their stand-off Charlie Craig orchestrated a 29-14 comeback win against Teachers.

Renegades trailed 14-4 at half-time but showed plenty of character to fight back for the comfortable victory.

Craig scored two tries and kicked three conversions and a penalty, with Robin Bricknell and Conor McGlynn also getting on the scoresheet.

Teachers’ scorers were Kia Edwards and Chinua Smith. Connor McGowan kicked two conversions.

In the second men’s game of the day, a revamped Mariners lost 40-25 to a Police side bursting with confidence after two early pieces of silverware already this season. The Blue Boks would not get their own way in a see-saw first half, which saw both sides exchange tries and penalties. A very tense competitive game developed in the second period, with both sides exchanging scores before Police’s fitness showed through. Police’s scorers were Andrew Kempe, Quinton Venter, Ben Green, Vaughn Van Oudtshoornt and Darren Richardson. Dan Cole kicked a penalty try and two penalties.

On the scoresheet for Mariners were Jess Kanongataa, with two tries, Paul Kelly and Mikael Dill. Rory Dublin kicked a penalty and a conversion.
