Featured runner: Dyrli caught the attention of the BBC

Bermuda’s James O’Shea finished in the top 200 at the Virgin Money London Marathon, finishing the race in a time of 2hr 36min 47sec.

The former Warwick Academy pupil, who now lives in London, set a formidable pace in the 26.2-mile race. He went through the halfway point in 1:16:07, which was three minutes faster than he achieved in last year’s Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby, where he finished ninth.

O’Shea was 195th overall in the race, which attracted an estimated 38,000 runners. He led home a contingent of 14 Bermudian-based runners. The next fastest was Anna Laura Hocking who clocked 3:39:41, ahead of Iuliano Whitney, in 3:44:08, and Steven Ortiz in 3:52:04.

In its coverage of the event, the British Broadcasting Corporation featured an image of Bermuda’s Natalie Dyrli running in a Union Jack-design dress similar to one worn by Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls.

Dyrli, who also competed in the Boston Marathon last Monday, ran a time of 4:43:15 in London.

The race was won by Eliud Kipchoge, of Kenya, in 2:03:05, only eight seconds slower than the world best for the distance.

First woman was Jemima Sumgong, also from Kenya, in 2:22:58.

Other Bermudian-based runners who finished the race were: Trevor Brookes in 3:56:22, Sarah Ruberry in 3:58:13, Anne Kermode in 4:08:08, Andre Vargas-Crispieri in 4:23:32, Nicole Andreasen in 4:32:33, Nancy Carrick in 4:55:09, while Catherine Silvester and Charlie Oleksak both finished in 5:51:13, and Bernie O’Reilly finished in 6:35:26.
