Ashley Estwanik won the PartnerRe 5K in what was a busy morning for the former Commonwealth Games track finalist.

Before lining up for the race at the Botanical Gardens she had competed in an early morning cycling time trial.

Estwanik took the double workout in her stride, showing superior strength and stamina as she broke clear in the 5K to win in 19 mins 40 sec.

Jennifer Alen was next to finish in the women-only event. She ran 20:18, and afterwards said she had to moderate her pace mid-race to cope with the hot conditions.

“My first mile was 6:07, the second was 6:50. I was feeling the heat and decided to run more comfortably,” she said.

Underscoring how yesterday’s heat dented finishing times, Alen recently ran in cooler conditions in England where she clocked 18:40 for a 5K.

Also, last month, she competed in the New York’s Fifth Avenue Mile road race, achieving an age category top ten finish in 5:12.

Looking ahead, Alen is focusing on the Front Street Mile at the Bermuda Marathon Weekend in January. She has an eye on making her marathon debut in 2017 and is waiting to hear if she has been accepted for the London Marathon.

In third place yesterday, Deon Breary ran 20:53. It was her first outing of the season and she was content to run at an even pace throughout, using the race to gauge her fitness.

Some of the 274 finishers had competed the previous day in the first cross country race of the season, which was held at Chaplin Bay.

One of those who did the back-to-back races was Victoria Fiddick, who was first senior master in both. In yesterday’s 5K she was ninth overall in 21:47.

She has competed every year in the event, which was celebrating its nineteenth anniversary. Fiddick has chalked up top three finishes in 17 of the previous PartnerRe events, including a number of victories.

Elsewhere in the age group divisions, Ashley Irby, 15, won the 15-29 category in 21:44, while Melissa Logie was top in the 20-39 group in 21:17.

The 40-49 category was won by Rebecca Shepherd in 21:40, while Maria Duffy was first in the 60-69 division in 26:02, and Marian Lines took the title in the over-70 group in 41:38.

There were more than 900 entries for the various races and walks, with proceeds from the event going to the Women’s Resource Centre.

In the 2K junior race for those aged 7-10, Myeisha Sharrieff was first in 7:12, followed by Jasmin Hasselkuss and Katherine Bean-Rosario.

The 2K race for the 11-14 age division was won by Jessie Marshall in 6:34, followed by Jessica Bruton and Kayla Raymond.

The 5K competitive walk was won by Emma Atherton in 35:51, ahead of Annette Eve and Sheena Young.
