Teuten aiming for Olympics

Alexander Teuten

It was at an early age that Alexander Teuten realised he was good at running. He competed in a cross-country race for eight- to ten-year-olds and came second, beating others who were two years his senior.

Today, he is still most at ease doing cross-country, and has represented England six times at the Brussels Cup, IAAF meet at Atapuerca, and British home countries internationals.

On the roads he enjoys 10K and 10-mile races, while his track forte is 5000 metres and 3000 steeplechase. At steeplechase he was the 2014 British Universities champion, and second in the national AAA championships last year.

He was seventh in last year’s Great South Run over 10 miles, in a time of 49:22. Meanwhile, in last month’s Victory 5 road race in Portsmouth, a five-mile event, he was third in 23:57, just edged out by Matthew Sharp, who is also in the England team coming to Bermuda.

Teuten is coming off a block of high mileage, low intensity training, where he was running about 90 miles a week.

He said: “I am hoping the event in Bermuda, especially the 10K, will provide a good stimulus for the remaining cross country races this year, along with the longer track races.

“It will be a fantastic experience in its own right though and I’m delighted to be competing in the event in what is my first road international.

“I’ve never been to Bermuda, or anywhere outside of Europe before for that matter. So it’ll be a lovely experience for me and I’m very excited to be invited.”

Speaking of his running ambitions, the Southampton University PhD student said he is focusing on winning a medal at this year’s British Universities and College Sport cross-country championships. In the longer term, he would like to represent Britain at either the European or World Cross-Country Championships.

On the track, he wants to reduce his steeplechase time from 9:01 to 8:30 to give him the opportunity of qualifying for the Olympics in 2020.

“I’ve consulted a specific chase coach this year who is optimistic, and with specific training which I’ve never done before I’m hoping I can bring my time down to 8:45 this season.”

Teuten will compete in Saturday’s 10K. He has a lifetime best for 10,000 metres, set last May, of 30:06. He is also looking to have a run out in Sunday’s half-marathon. His best at that distance is 1:08:19.
