Chayce Smith and Laura Wright made it three victories out of three in the Swan’s Running Club Legends race series when they won their respective divisions in the Ludwig Cann 10K.

Smith, 29, was always in control during the extended race, which previously was a 5K event.

Running alongside Tim Price in the opening mile, Smith soon pulled away on the out-and-back course along South Road. He reached the finish at Astwood Park in 35min 44sec, with Price next in 37:20, and Chefton Hall third in 40:25.

Wright, 34, was untroubled as she secured the women’s title in 43:06, running sub seven-minute miles the entire distance to finish tenth overall.

Sarah Briggs was second in 45:56, followed by Andrea Luber in 47:13.

Yesterday’s race honoured Cann, who for many decades competed in almost every road race in Bermuda. A cheerful, effervescent character, he was noted for his colourful outfits, which included bright T-shirts, knee-high socks and Crocs painted gold.

Although running almost always at the back of the pack, he rarely failed to finish no matter what the distance.

The Ludwig Cann race was first held in 2006 and Cann, who was affectionately known as “Luddy”, competed in the first few editions. He died in June 2010, aged 82.

Age category winners in yesterday’s race were Ronae Burgess, first master in 41:12, Kavin Smith, first senior master in 41:10, Frederick Steede, first over-60 in 45:58, and Michael Whalley, first over-70 in 58:24.

Among the women, Bonnie Mills was first master in 52:55, Jennie Kelly was first senior master in 54:23, and Mayberline Black was first over-60 in 60:39.

The 10K walk was won by Rene Notter in 1hr 17min 24sec, followed closely by first woman Gilda Cann in 1:17:27, with Sinclair Smith third overall in 1:20:44.

The Legends race series also honours Ed Sherlock, Ray Swan and the late “Sir” Stanley Burgess. The final event, a 5K in honour of Burgess, takes place on May 7.

n Island athletes Sharon Craig and Wenda Roberts competed in yesterday’s Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Haines City, Florida.

Craig finished fifth in the 55-59 category in a time of 5hr 48min 18sec. She completed the 1.2-mile swim in 45min 04sec, the 56-mile bike ride in 3hr 01min 35sec, and the half-marathon run in 1:52:56.

In the same age category, Roberts was 15th overall in 6:30:43. She clocked 53:53 in the swim, 3:00:04 on the bike, and 2:29:20 in the run.
