Christian Ebbin leads Bermuda’s contingent heading into today’s final day of qualifying races at the Optimist World Championships in Thailand.

Ebbin has been by far Bermuda’s most consistent sailor to this point at the championships.

He is 117th after four races in the individual championship competing among a record field of 281 entries from 62 countries with a best showing of 23rd to date.

Second highest local sailor in Thailand is Rian Geraghty- McDonnell who sits in 144th and is also racing in the Blue fleet along with compatriot Ebbin.

Sebastian Kempe, who is competing in the green fleet, rounds off the top three in the local field in 177th.

Jordan Etemadi, who is competing in the green fleet, and Jack Hildebrand, racing in the red fleet, sit in 202nd and 241st.

Steady 15-18 knot breezes provided perfect racing conditions for the sailors during yesterday’s second day.

All fleets completed their two scheduled races although several experienced general recalls, with 18 sailors black flagged on restarts.

A freak storm that rolled in with little warning as the last fleet finished its second race saw the young sailors confronted with steep waves and torrential rain on their way back to shore.

Following today’s final day of qualifying races the sailors will be split into gold, silver and bronze fleets based on rankings, thus heating up the battle for the four trophies up for grabs.

Mic Sig Kos Mohr, of Costa Rica, is the overall leader. Marco Gradoni, of Italy, sits in second and Roy Levy, of Isreal, in third.

Beatriz Gago, of Portugal, is the top girl and 15th overall.
