America’s Cup foiling catamarans could potentially make a return to local waters in the near future.

It is understood that a regatta possibly featuring the AC50 foiling catamaran used for the 35th America’s Cup, which Bermuda hosted this year, could be held on the Great Sound.

Among those being linked to the project is Sir Russell Coutts, who served as the chief executive of the America’s Cup Event Authority.

“At this stage there are no set plans on anything,” was all that Alejandro Mato, Coutts’s personal assistant, was prepared to comment on when approached by The Royal Gazette.

The AC50 is the smallest class raced in the America’s Cup and is capable of speeds reaching 60mph.

However, the future of the multihull racing yacht remains uncertain after Emirates Team New Zealand, the 36th America’s Cup defender, and Luna Rossa, the Challenger of Record, confirmed that the next instalment of the “Auld Mug” will be contested in 75ft monohulls by a crew of ten to 12.

Team New Zealand thrashed holders Oracle 7-1 in Bermuda in June with a vastly superior boat boasting radical pedal grinders, foil daggerboards and control systems.

The New York Yacht Club will challenge for the next America’s Cup.

The legendary club ended a 15-year hiatus from sailing’s holy grail after announcing that it will compete for a place in Auckland in 2021.

The NYYC is the first additional challenger and will be represented by Bella Mente Quantum Racing Association.

The NYYC last backed a challenge in 2002-03 with Team Dennis Conner.

The club hosted the event from 1851 until 1983, when Australia II beat Conner’s Liberty to end the longest winning streak in sport.

The announcement that the NYYC has issued a challenge arrived hot on the heels of the release of the protocol for the 36th America’s Cup by Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa.

Britain and France have signalled their intention to challenge in Auckland, while Switzerland and Australia have also expressed interest.
