The Bermuda team demonstrated why they are ranked third in the world after producing a solid display competing at the recent Optimist Canadian Championships in Ottawa, Canada.

The island was represented by five sailors, four of whom finished in the top ten at the regatta hosted by the Britannia Yacht Club and held from August 14 to 20.

Laura Hupman finished as the top girl and second among an overall fleet of more than 100 sailors.

Ava Adams also earned a spot on the podium after finishing third among the girls and sixth overall.

Amelia Lewis and PJ Rodrigues finished eighth and ninth followed by Sophia Dias in 22nd.

“It was a great result for the sailors with four in the top ten and all five in the top 25,” Joshua Greenslade, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club coach, said.

“The conditions were difficult mentally with a lot of waiting due to lack of wind, but when we had the wind to race the sailors were ready to go.

“Overall, it was a good event for the sailors to work on their big fleet skills.”

Canada’s Thomas Desrochers, of the Port Credit Yacht Club, won the championships by an eight-point margin over Bermuda’s Hupman.

Organisers were only able to complete six qualifying races because of poor weather conditions.

Bermuda’s strong showing in Ottawa followed on the heels of the island’s impressive display the Cork International Optimist Regatta in Ontario this month, where Christian Ebbin won the regatta and Rachael Betschart was second among the girls and sixteenth overall.

Lewis, Hupman and Dias also competed at that event where they qualified for the Gold Fleet, finishing of 23rd, 24th and 39th respectively.

Adams, Dias, Hupman, Lewis and Rodrigues are among the Bermuda team, which will compete at the Optimist North American Championships in Nassau, Bahamas, from September 27 to October 4.
