Bermuda squad has youthful look

The Bermuda Football Association has named a new-look 20-man squad for the Caribbean Cup second round match against French Guiana.

Reggie Lambe will captain the side in the absence of Kieshen Bean who, along with Nahki Wells and several other key players, is unavailable for Wednesday’s game.

The absence of several senior members of the side has created a number of openings with Andrew Bascome, the head coach, opting to bring in some fresh faces.

Among them are Bascome’s nephew Osagi Bascome, Shaki Smith, Jahkari Furbert, Quintonio Lema, James Pace, Jabri Salaam and Kacy Butterfield.

Many of the youngsters were national youth squad players just a couple of years ago, but Maurice Lowe, the BFA technical director, insists all the players have been picked on merit.

He also stressed that the team have a mission of advancing to the next round of the competition.

“We’re not trying to ‘bring anybody along’, players have been included because they belong there,” Lowe said. “Many of them are under-20 players, it speaks to our national academy as being a proper academy now.

“We’ve had lots of unavailabilities for several different reasons and we just moved down our list to see who is the next player who fits the profile for the players that we’re trying to replace.

“We’re still going to French Guiana to work hard and return home to work hard again and progress to the next round.

“We have a mission ahead of us and we’re going to accomplish that mission.”

Also in the squad are veteran Damon Ming, Rai Simons, Dale Eve, and Jahquil Hill, who will provide goalkeeper cover for Eve. Jaylon Bather, Zeiko Lewis, Killian Elkinson and Dante Leverock, have also been included along with Roger Lee, Drewonde Bascome and Willie Clemons.

“James Pace has been on the fringe just recently with a couple of the other squads that we put together, so we’re thankful to him for making himself available again,” Lowe said.

“You get rewarded if you persevere and we’re looking for good things from him, and everyone else who has been included.

“We still have a ways to go in terms of work ethic, but this team is ready and willing to put in some work. We’re going to work hard.”

Bermuda, who drew 1-1 with French Guiana in their home match in the first round, are looking for a good result away to give themselves a good chance of advancing when they host Dominican Republic at home in their second group match on June 4. The top two teams will advance.

The squad, led by coaches Bascome and Kyle Lightbourne, leaves Bermuda today ahead of next Wednesday’s match against French Guiana. They will stop in Fort Lauderdale for a training camp before travelling to French Guiana on Monday.
