Dion Stovell’s football career has come full circle.

The seasoned striker has rejoined First Division Paget Lions, where his career began in humble settings, after a surprise move from Premier Division side Somerset Trojans during the summer transfer period.

With time running out on his football career, Stovell has vowed to give everything he has left in the tank to help steer his childhood club in the right direction.

“My football days are almost over and now it’s time to go back to my childhood club and give them what I have left,” Stovell said. “I want to help the club go in the right direction and enjoy the remainder of my career.”

Stovell is among a small group of players boasting Premier Division experience who have either returned or joined Paget for the season.

Asked what his expectations for the team this season were, Stovell replied: “Paget won’t be the whipping boys, I can you tell you that. It’s going to be a very interesting season, and everyone is up for it.”

Stovell spent most of his career in top-flight football at Trojans where he won multiple honours, including a Premier League title during the 2014-15 campaign, the club’s first in 22 years.

“I have had a good career at Somerset,” he said. “I have to thank Somerset because they have been there for me through the rough patches, and I also got the opportunity to tour with them to Haiti [in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championships].”

Along with Stovell, Paget have also had their ranks bolstered by the acquisitions of Robert Richardson, Kian Butterfield, McQuinn Burch, Jason Smith and Ayshaun Smith — all players boasting top-flight experience.

Michael Stovell, the Paget Community Club president and cousin of Dion, said the influx of experienced players has sparked a lot of excitement at the club.

“It’s been a big buzz since the community found out the likes of Dion and McQuinn, who live in Paget, are suiting up for us again,” he said.

Proof of the buzz Stovell alluded to was on display at Paget’s opening game of the season away to Ireland Rangers, which the visiting side won 3-1, to get the new campaign off on the front foot.

“I saw fans I haven’t seen since 2006 when we got promoted to the Premier Division, and these fans are five to ten years older than me, so to see them come all the way to Ireland Rangers is a positive and a good start for the community,” Michael Stovell said.

The foundation of Paget’s revival was laid during the previous season.

“This was something that probably started midway through last season when neighbourhood guys like McQuinn, Robert and Kian were attending a lot of our games and giving input to the coach,” Michael Stovell said.

“Then Dion approached me and said he is coming back and he has a few guys from the neighbourhood that would like to come also. Basically Dion spearheaded everything and we managed to get the transfers.”

Stovell is presently serving a three-game suspension and is not expected to play for Paget until the end of next month after playing for Bermuda at the ICC World Cricket League Division Four tournament in Los Angeles.

Paget could potentially add to their roster during next month’s late transfer period.

“We have a few late transfers trying to get in,” Stovell said. “But I can’t say anything on that at the moment.”

• The Premier Division match between Somerset Eagles and Devonshire Colts, which was postponed on September 25 and rescheduled for October 16, has now been brought forward to Sunday.

The match will be the only top-flight encounter this weekend as the First Division takes the spotlight, and will start at 3pm at White Hill Field.

Both Eagles and Colts lost their opening matches last weekend, Eagles losing 2-0 to Boulevard in their first match back in the top tier while Colts were thrashed 5-2 by North Village.
