X-Roads boost their survival hopes

Donavan Thompson netted for X-Roads

X-Roads 3 Southampton Rangers 2Both teams entered the match knowing a win would be vital to their top-flight survival as they both hovered just above the relegation zone. It was X-Roads who prevailed with three goals at Garrison Field yesterday. The win allows them to leapfrog their opponents in the table.“We identified that they were one place above us and I asked them where did they want to be at the end of the season, in the Premier League or in the First Division and they showed that to me today,” Wendell Furbert, the X-Roads caretaker coach, said.X-Roads had Rangers on the back foot when Donavan Thompson followed up on a poor defensive clearance to be first to the ball and place a low shot to the right of Ranger’s goalkeeper Shaquille Bean. Rangers equalised midway through the half when they won a free kick near the corner flag. A cross to the front post was partially blocked by X-Roads’ defender Jamin Furbert, which dropped into the path of Kieshon Wilson who made no mistake from just two yards.Rangers nearly scored just before the break when Keedai Astwood’s cross forced X-Roads’ goalkeeper Jez Burrows to race off his line to collect as Jarazhino Bassett was about to poke home. X-Roads took the lead after the break when Tyrell Burgess’s free kick rattled the cross bar before bouncing near the penalty spot where Patrick Richardson slammed a half volley.Burrows gifted Rangers an opportunity to equalise when he needlessly pulled down Kamali Davis leaving referee Lloyd Christopher no choice but to award a penalty kick. Burrows dove full length to his left to push captain Donte Brangman‘s weak penalty around the post. X-Roads capitalised on that miss when Kahmori Brangman’s cross found Burgess unmarked at the back post. He had time to control the ball before firing it into the net.SCORERSX-Roads: Thompson 9, Richardson 51, Burgess 65Southampton Rangers: Wilson 22TEAMSX-Roads (4-2-3-1): J Burrows — C McDowall, M Hill, K Wilkinson, J Furbert — P Richardson (sub: C Hayward 79) D Woolridge (sub: A Burgess 70) — K Brangman, T Daniels, D Thompson — T Burgess.
