Whaley breaks stout defence with big play

Whaley broke a 51-yard run for Arkansas’s biggest play on Saturday

Devwah Whaley had the day’s biggest play with a 51-yard run as defence came out on top during the University of Arkansas’s second spring scrimmage on Saturday.

The Bermudian sophomore running back’s long run set up an 11-yard touchdown scamper from fellow running back Rawleigh Williams, the junior who is slated to start for the Razorbacks in the 2017 season. Whaley was credited with 95 yards on 18 carries during the weekend scrimmage.

Meanwhile, Whaley was full of praise for Arkansas freshman running back Maleek Williams, who has had an impressive first spring with the Razorbacks.

“Maleek had a good day and ... he showed some good speed and good vision,” said Whaley on the freshman’s first scrimmage appearance the previous Saturday. “You could see it in practice. He’s young. I’m still young. Me and Rawleigh [Williams] are going to keep helping him along the way so he can keep improving, and us as well.”

Before spring practice began, Maleek Williams went through the offseason programme and has worked to change his body, shedding 17 pounds after arriving on campus weighing 236.

“He’s been eating,” Whaley said. “It just all depends on what you eat. Maleek has lost the weight, he’s been disciplined. He’s doing a good job at it. He’s really emphasising and focusing on losing weight.”
