David Maycock finished in tenth place after 24 games of qualifying at the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Palembang, Indonesia, while team-mate Patrick Tucker failed to advance in the women’s competition after placing 37th. Maycock climbed one place from eleventh overnight, comfortably finishing in the top 24 for the next round of competition. He finished with 4,953 pins for an average of 206.83 and had a high game of 268.Tucker dropped two places to 37th, 267 pins outside the final qualifying place. She finished with 4,221 pins with a high game of 224 for an average of 175.83. The women were first on the lanes and it looked fairly clear-cut before Driskell Rolle, of the Bahamas, started shooting big scores, including a 288, the new high game for the tournament. With one game Rolle was in 25th place, admittedly 45 pins off the cut, but she was bowling so well that Amandine Jacques, of France, Yumi Yuzuriha, of Peru, and Alja Bergauer, of Slovenia, were starting to become concerned. Unfortunately for Driskell, her final game was not high enough and she missed out, dropping down to leave Heidi Thorstensen, of Norway, in the dreaded 25th spot after Jacques bowled steadily to take 24th. Bergauer, 15, was relieved to finish 23rd. “I don’t know how to explain in English how I feel,” she said. “I had a bad last game and I thought I had missed out, but I’m not even 24th, I’m 23rd. I’ve been told I am the youngest female player ever to make the top 24. That would be some record!”Natasha Roslan, of Malaysia, finished top on 5,016 pins, with Kelly Kulick, of the United States, in second (4,958) and Maria Koshel, of Russia, and Aumi Guerra, of the Dominican Republic, tied for third on 4,896. In the men’s competition, Francois Louw, of South Africa, the leader since day one, looked like he had lost his form but that was only an illusion as he hit a 1,310 to remain way out in the lead on 5,520. There was some high scoring from other players as well, notably from Oliver Morig, of Germany, who shot a brilliant 1,432. including the high game of the day, a 279, to hold on to second place on 5,332. Wanhee Lee, of Korea, is in third on 5,135, while Indonesia’s Ryan Lalisang finished fourth.
