Game guys: footballers clean a stretch of the main road into St David’s after Hurricane Nicole (Photograph submitted)

Footballers worked up a sweat on Saturday morning to help their local community clean a stretch of the main road into St David’s.

First-team players as well as cricket club officials were up bright and early at 8am to cut back foliage and pick up litter and debris on St David’s Road from the police station.

The task was made more challenging due to the aftermath of Hurricane Nicole, which caused widespread damage across the island on Thursday.

The event had been organised by the St David’s Football Club well in advance of the Category 3 hurricane, and organisers say they plan to keep up the cleanup effort.

Football team coach OJ Minors told The Royal Gazette the group cleared all the way up to Emily’s Bay Road and would return again in two weeks to continue their work up towards the cricket club.

“People in the area were upset at how this main road had been left, so we decided to do something about it,” he said.

“We had just over a dozen guys out there with some other people from the community. It was not as bad as we thought it would be after the hurricane but there was still plenty of clearing that needed doing.”
