There was plenty of fun and exciting tennis on offer during Tucker’s Point Tennis Club’s Developmental Championships at the weekend.

The well-attended two-day event involved about 70 junior players that were split up into three age categories.

Each division used equipment best suited for their development, with players under the age of eight using red balls on a 36-foot court, under-ten orange balls on a 60-foot court and under-12 green balls on a standard court.

Sebastien Smith and Milly Wetherhill won the under-12 boys’ and girls’ titles, Antonio Warner and Jae Gibbons claimed the under-ten boys’ and girls’ titles, while the under-eight boys’ and girls’ titles went to Sebastien Pukk and Evi Robb.

Gavin Manders, the Tucker’s Point Tennis Club head professional, was encouraged by the impressive turnout and exciting tennis demonstrated by the young players.

“It was a weekend full of some great junior tennis, which was brilliant to watch as it shows the sport of tennis is on the rise with so many juniors participating in an under-12 tournament,” Manders, the island’s No 1 singles player, said.

“We had about 250 people come through the club over the weekend, and the environment was contagious with so much fun and laughter around the courts.”

Manders, one of Bermuda’s most successful Davis Cup players, said that his club “is dedicated to raising the level of tennis in Bermuda”.

“We believe that Tucker’s Point is the premier tennis club on the island for all levels and ages,” he added.

“Jovan Whitter [the Tucker’s Point Tennis Club assistant professional] and I have a vision for Bermuda tennis.

“With the help of the new Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association executive, we believe tennis will continue to grow, giving the next generation of youth another positive outlet to put their energy into.

“We look to continue to share our passion for tennis with the next generation, and are very proud of the impact that we are having on the youth.”
