Bermuda were swept aside by Honduras in their opening Davis Cup tie, losing 3-0 in Bolivia yesterday.

Gavin Manders and Neal Towlson both lost their singles matches in three sets, while David Thomas and Jenson Bascome lost the doubles in straight sets.

Up first against Keny Turcios, Manders actually went ahead, taking the first set 7-5, before eventually losing 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Towlson then went down 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to Alejando Obando, before Turcios and Ricardo Pineda teamed up to make short work of their Bermuda opponents in the doubles, winning 6-3, 6-1.

Despite the results Michael Wolfe, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president, who is in Bolivia with the team, said he was encouraged by the performance and thought it bode well for the rest of the week.

“In the singles matches we certainly had our chances against very seasoned players,” he said. “Our players without question gave 110 per cent and as a supporter I could have no fault of effort given today.

“The altitude in Bolivia certainly played a part in the match as recovery after long points was difficult.

“However, as we move further into the week our players should become more acclimatised to the elements. Having watched the matches first I certainly see positive building blocks for the rest of the weeks play.”

Bermuda face Bahamas tomorrow, the team seeded highest in their group.
