National tennis director Ricky Mallory said he has high expectations for the team to represent Bermuda at the Junior Davis Cup in El Salvador.

Flying the island’s flag are Trey Mallory, Scott Redmond and Tariq Simons.

“This is one of the strongest Junior Davis Cup teams, if not the strongest, Bermuda has had in many years,” said Mallory, who will accompany the team to Central America in the capacity as coach.

“My expectations for any team that the BLTA sends out to represent Bermuda are always high. I continually look to push our juniors in order to get the best out of them and I expect nothing less than 110 per cent effort from this group of boys.

“They will go out there knowing that they are the best that Bermuda has and will represent us to the fullest.”

Simons resides and trains in Jamaica, and is the son of local photographer and reggae recording artist Ras Mykkal.

He returned to Bermuda to participate in team trials, along with Redmond.

“The trial matches went well with some high-quality matchups,” Mallory said. “I was particularly impressed with Tariq’s performance in the trials.

“I’m happy to have him [Simons] on board representing Bermuda. He will bring an added boost to the team.”

Mallory’s son, Trey, solidified his position after acquiring International ITF Junior Circuit points.

Mallory Jr, a student at L’Academie de Tennis, made local history at the Curaçao Open last year, when he became Bermuda’s youngest player to acquire ITF Junior Circuit points.

He was also a member of the victorious under-14 boys’ doubles team at the tenth annual “Little Mo” Internationals in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where he also finished runner-up in the singles.

The Junior Davis Cup is an international team competition for boys aged 16 and under, and was launched by the ITF in 1985.

Bermuda’s juniors will compete at the tournament in El Salvador from March 27 to April 2.
