Mallory aims to extend fine run of form

Trey Mallory will be keen to extend his fine form of late at next week’s ITF Junior De Saint-Francois tournament in Guadeloupe.

The teenage tennis player impressed on his Junior Davis Cup debut in El Salvador recently, posting an unblemished 5-0 record playing in the No 1 slot in the singles without dropping a set.

Mallory ranked among the top three players at the Junior Davis Cup North/Central America and Caribbean prequalifying event, with two other players also going undefeated.

It is this superb form that the L’Academie de Tennis student is looking to continue on the hard court surface in Guadeloupe which he prefers playing on.

“Coming fresh off the Junior Davis Cup in El Salvador is definitely a confidence booster,” Mallory said.

The starlet, who made history at the Curaçao Open last year when he became Bermuda’s youngest player to acquire ITF Junior Circuit points, has his work cut out in Guadeloupe, however.

“This competition will be a bit tougher as this is an 18-and-under event and I’m still 14 and learning,” Mallory said. “I go into every event with the intent to win but will be focusing on one match at a time and not looking too far ahead at the draw.”

Mallory is making his fifth appearance in an ITF event, where precious world ranking points are at stake.

“My coach, Lawrence Carpio, has discussed with my dad [Ricky Mallory] about playing more ITF’s and USTA events this summer,” Mallory said. “He has set a number for me to reach in regards to the amount of competitive matches I have to play at this level and has created a tournament list for me to play in certain ITF and USTA events.”

The ITF Junior Circuit offers more than 400 tournaments in 121 different countries. Depending on the grade of tournament, players earn points towards the world rankings.

Bermuda’s Junior Davis Cup team raised the bar in El Salvador this year. Local trio Tariq Simons, Scott Redmond and Mallory placed seventh out of 18 countries, the highest finish for Bermuda since they began competing in the Junior Davis Cup event.

The local youngsters beat Jamaica and sixth seeds Puerto Rico to qualify for the main elimination draw. In the main draw, they narrowly missed defeating No 3 seeds Aruba.

Bermuda then met the Dominican Republic, where once again it came down to a doubles decision, which they lost 2-1. Bermuda won their final match against Barbados 2-1 to end on their campaign on a high note.
