Another final for Phillips

Phillips is on the verge of a second singles title at the 68th Annual Frinton Junior & Open Tournament in Essex, England

Daniel Phillips, the Bermuda tennis player, is on the verge of another singles title in the UK.

The 12-year-old player, who attends the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca, has reached the final of the 68th Annual Frinton Junior & Open Tournament in Essex, England.

The unseeded Phillips breezed through the opening two rounds, losing only three games in comfortable wins over Enrico Franchi (6-2, 6-0) and K Van-Roon Collins (6-0, 6-1), the No 6 seed.

He was just as dominant in the knockout stage, beating No 2 seed Gabriel Overton 6-2, 6-0 in the quarter-finals and No 4 seed Saul Hindmarch 6-1, 6-1 in the semi-final.

Phillips will meet No 3 seed Seth Midwood, who beat No 1 seed Toby Terrell in the other semi final, in today’s final on the grass court at the Frinton Lawn Tennis and Squash Club.

Summing up his tournament to date, Phillips, now on the verge of a second singles title at the grade 3 southeast regional event, said: “During my first two matches I felt I had the advantage because of my international experience.

“At the quarter-finals, in the warm up, I knew it was going to be a hard match. My strategy was to start hard and I kept going.

“In the semi finals my strategy was to be aggressive and push him [Hindmarch] back as far as possible, and it worked for me.

“For the final I am going to have to be on top of my game.

“Being on grass court has changed my game. I have to be more agile because the ball comes a lot faster.

“I have been learning to slide on the grass as it is not the same as clay. I feel ready.”

Phillips won the eight and under mixed singles division at the 2012 Annual Frinton Junior & Open Tournament.

He is due to the return to the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy at the end of the month.
