Double joy for Phillips

Prize guy: Phillips poses with his singles trophy

Daniel Phillips pulled off an impressive double at the 68th Annual Frinton Junior & Open Tournament in Essex, England at the weekend.

The Bermudian won the Under-12 boys singles title after blowing away No 3 seed Seth Midwood in Saturday’s final.

He also won the mixed doubles title with Sophia Middleton to cap an outstanding tournament on the grass courts at the Frinton Lawn Tennis and Squash Club.

The unseeded Phillips had things all his own way against Midwood in the singles final, losing just one game en route to emphatic 6-0, 6-1 triumph over his British opponent.

“I am really pleased,” Phillips said. “I lost eight games in five matches in the boys singles.”

Midwood was the third seeded player to lose to the relentless Phillips who also knocked off No 2 seed Gabriel Overton, No 4 seed Saul Hindmarch and No 6 seed K Van-Roon Collins on the way to the final.

The promising player’s day got even better after he and England’s Middleton beat Jemima Ling and Guy Morley-Jacob 6-1, 7-6 to win the mixed doubles title.

“Winning the mixed doubles playing with Sophia Middleton was a great achievement also,” Phillips said.

Phillips has now won two singles titles and as many in doubles at the LTA Grade 3 event, which forms part of the summer regional tour in the UK.

He made his first appearance at age seven in 2012, losing in the final. But he returned the following year with a bang, winning the under-8 boys singles and doubles titles.

Phillips hopes to play at Wimbledon Under-16 Tournament as early as next year and as recent results suggests appears to be on target.

He is at present nurturing his skills at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca where he is due to return at the end of the month.

“I am looking forward to getting back to the academy to see my coaches and get training,” said Phillips, whose next tournament will be held on clay in Spain next month.
