Daniel Phillips won the title at the Rafa Nadal Tour Under-14 Tennis Tournament in Barcelona in a three-set thriller yesterday.

The 14-year-old showed plenty of guts and determination to beat Miguel Avendaño Cadena 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the final.

Cadena squandered two match points in the tie-break and double-faulted allowing Phillips to go on to serve and win the match.

Phillip, who attends the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, chalked up wins over Mateo Alvarez Sarmiento, 6-2, 6-1, Danil Mishchanin, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4, Bernardo Munk Mesa, 6-1, 6-1, and Jordi Moure Carreras, 6-1, 6-1, en route to the final.

He also claimed successive victories in the qualifying round to reach the main draw, beating Guillermo Sanchis and Ivan Formin.
