Shaquille Dill has become an NCAA Division II champion after winning the 800 metres final in Bradenton, Florida, at the weekend.

Dill put his disappointing indoor season behind him to win his event at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the IMG Academy Track and Field Stadium.

The 22-year-old, who posted a time of 1min 49.30sec, helped Saint Augustine’s University win the overall men’s title with 85 points.

“I felt good about the championships and winning, and gaining the all-American title and becoming a national champion,” he said.

“I was more focused on strategy and winning [than my time] so I could contribute points for my team to win the title overall.”

Dill, who is trying to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games, was also part of Saint Augustine’s 4x400 relay team who won their race with their fastest time of the season in 3:05.47.

“I’ve had a really good season, each time improving my times in the 800 at these outdoor meets,” he said.

“I’m in really good shape and feeling very strong and fit to chase the qualifying time for the Olympics [1.46].”

Dill will return to the island for this month’s XL Catlin National Championships to be held on June 10 and 11.
