Pacers enjoy medal haul in North Carolina

Sancho Smith was named the outstanding athlete in the 13-14 boys’ division as the Bermuda Pacers Track Club returned yesterday from the Russell E Blunt East Coast Invitational meet in Durham, North Carolina, with 25 individual and two team relay medals.

This marks the second time that Smith has won an outstanding athlete award, after claiming a gold in the high jump and 1,500 metres as well as a bronze in the 800. The Pacers placed second overall in the boys’ division for the second straight year and finished in the top five team positions for the third successive year.

Competing in temperature over 95 degrees during the three-day meet, team won eight individual gold medals and one relay gold in the 4x400 13-14 girls, as well as eight silver and another relay silver for the 13-14 4x100 girls. They also claimed nine bronze medals as the boys team placed second overall for the second straight year.

The meet attracted over 1,100 athletes representing 87 teams from across the East Coast, including the Pacers who were making their 36th appearance at the meet.

Other gold medal-winners for the Pacers were Johndell Cumberbatch in the 17-18 boys’ 3,000; Ryan Outerbridge in the 15-16 boys’ 1,500 and 3000; Elisha Darrell in the 17-18 boys’ long jump; Chayse Tanner in the 13-14 boys’ 100; Zakayza Parsons in the 13-14 girls’ long jump and the 13-14 girls’ 4x400 relay team of Katurah Bulford Trott, Selah Tuzo, Sanaa Rae Morris and Koa Goodchild.

Silver medal-winners were Isael Smith in the 9-10 boys high jump and 100; Darrell in the high jump; Aaron Jacobs in the 17-18 boys’ 800; Sajan Harvey in the 15-16 800; Jauza James in the 11-12 boys’ high jump; Chayse Tanner in the 13-14 boys’ 200; Selah Tuzo in the 13-14 girls’ 800 and the 13-14 girls’ 4x100 relay team.

Bronze medal-winners were Sancho Smith in the 800; Malik Joell in the 15-16 boys’ 800; Jace Donawa in the 9-10 boys’ 800 and 400 and long jump; Isael Smith in the 9-10 boys’ 200; Koa Goodchild in the 13-14 girls’ 1,500, Tuzo in the 13-14 girls’ 800 and Myeisha Sharrieff in the 11-12 girls’ 800.
