Bermudian Arantxa King has been named as a member of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletes’ commission.

Donna Raynor, president of the Bermuda National Athletics Association, confirmed the appointment yesterday. “We received correspondence from NACAC that they were requesting for all of the NACAC members to send a female candidate to be evaluated for the NACAC Athletes commission, with two candidates to be selected back in February,” Raynor said. “Arantxa stated she would be interested as she wants to continue to be involved in the sport, so we put her name forward. We received correspondence last week that she had been selected. I forwarded it to her and she was ecstatic.”

King is a two-times Olympian who represented Bermuda in long jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and London 2012. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in March.

The 28-year-old also represented Bermuda at the Carifta Games, the Pan Am Games and the Commonwealth Games. She now works at a New York Cityy law firm.

The athletes on the commission are: Jeff Porter, US, Kim Collins, St Kitt and Nevis, Michael Frater, Jamaica, Yipsi Moreno, Cuba, Kineke Alexander, St Vincent, Kendry Beatriz Rosales, Honduras, Arantxa King, Bermuda, Sherly Scott, Costa Rica, and Inaki Gomez, Canada.

The commission’s functions include assisting in the formation of policies so that there is always an athlete’s perspective, as well as being a voice for the athletes if it is felt decisions are affecting their performances.

The commission will be a group that athletes can go to with any concerns.
