Perinchief helps Texas Tech defend title

Jah'nai Perinchief

Jah-Nhai Perinchief achieved a remarkable double to help Texas Tech University men’s athletics team defend their Big 12 Championship title at the weekend.

The Bermudian finished runner-up and set new personal bests competing in the high jump and triple jump at the two-day championships hosted by his alma mater. In the triple jump, Perinchief leapt a personal best of 16.75 metres, the best showing of the four Texas Tech jumpers. The 21-year-old then claimed second in the high jump, his speciality event, with a personal best leap of 2.28.

“I went in like it was just another track meet,” Perinchief said. “A typical day and just another regular meet.

“I didn’t think about it too much or do anything too different. I think I do better when I’m relaxed and not tensed up thinking about the meet.”

Perinchief and his Texas Tech team-mates produced their college’s most dominant victory in conference history to retain their Big 12 Championship title.

They finished 70-points clear of second-placed Iowa State with Kansas placing third with 87 points. This month has been highly productive for Perinchief, who set a new meet record en route to winning the high jump at the Texas Tech Open with a leap of 2.12.

He also achieved what was then a personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 16.43 at the Texas Tech Shoot-out.

Perinchief says that the best is yet to come. “I know I have more to give; I’ve just got to execute properly,” he said.
