Days before the start of the 2016 Hurricane Season, the Ministry of National Security is urging the public to be prepared for storms.

This week, the ministry will be marking Hurricane Preparedness Week with a series of events aimed at reminding residents to remain alert.

Jeff Baron, the Minister of National Security and the chairman of the Emergency Measures Organisation, said: “Bermuda has a history of being well prepared for storms. Security Services, Government departments and partner agencies work well together throughout the year and especially so during hurricane season.

“The Ministry of National Security will continue to reach all residents with the message of preparedness and co-ordinate the EMO in support of Bermuda’s management of any issues arising out of hurricanes or storms during this season.

“I would encourage all of Bermuda to stay abreast of this week’s awareness efforts and, above all, ensure that their storm preparation kits are updated as we enter hurricane season.”

The ministry has released a hurricane preparation flyer, detailing what steps should be taken before, during and after a storm, and the emergency broadcast system on 100.1FM is set to be tested daily between 2pm and 2.30pm this week.

Listeners are invited to tune in and participate in the prize giveaway by answering questions that are posed by the announcer. They are also urged to provide feedback on the strength of the signal in the area they are located.

On Wednesday — the formal start of the hurricane season — a free public lecture will be held at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium led by Mark Guishard of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, detailing how residents can assess their own risk from hurricanes.

The presentation is scheduled to start at 6pm.
