Students urged to dream, believe and achieve

Off to a great start; 117 students attained principal’s honours during term one at the Berkley Institute (December 2015)

At The Berkeley Institute, students were told in September to dream big, set goals and plan the path towards them.

They were encouraged to believe in themselves, and to do the work required to achieve their goals and realise their dreams.

From September to June, this year has been filled with achievement. In addition to the photos that tell some of the story, The Berkeley Institute also wishes to highlight the following:

• Founder’s Day included alumni/student activities in which alumni came to the school to engage current students in football and netball matches.

• Students attended college tours in the US and the UK. They were inspired by their experiences and determined to achieve the necessary qualifications to attend a college that they had visited.

• At the Agricultural Exhibition in April, Berkeley students won awards for their phenomenal work in cake-decorating and woodworking.

• Throughout the year, the Arts Department produced phenomenal shows which played to sold-out audiences, including Peter Pan, dance concert, the music concert, and Sarafina.

• The Male Initiative provided support and activities to school-identified “at-risk” youth throughout the year. This group was effective in promoting positive behaviour.

• Beyond Rugby provided mentoring support to students in the context of the team sport.

• Kyrsten Burrows and Dejanee Hill-Edwards were The Berkeley Institute’s first full-time dual-enrolment students to complete the Associates’ degree and graduate from high school in the same year.

• Project Pangaea, the student-led tutoring programme, initiated by Kyrsten Burrows, provided tutoring support to many Berkeleyites, including hospitalised students.

• Twenty students qualified for the new honours certificate programme with four graduating with Advanced Honours Summa Cum Laude: Imani Smith who achieved 5 IGCSE A*-C, will complete her Associates in Insurance with the Bermuda Insurance Institute this summer, and has a GPA of 3.68, Kimika Jackson, who achieved 5 IGCSEs A*-C, has completed 50 college credits and has a GPA of 3.86, Dejanee Hill Edwards, who completed 6 IGCSEs A*-C, completed 67 credits for her Associates degree and has a 4.06 GPA and Kyrsten Burrows who also had 6 IGCSEs A*-C, completed 66 college credits for his Associates degree and a GPA of 4.14.

• The graduation ceremony celebrated the achievement of 130 students, 69 females and 61 males.

On behalf of The Berkeley Institute, I wish to express gratitude to the Berkeley Educational Society, the Board of Governors, the deputy principals, teachers and staff, and parents/guardians for their support and work throughout the year.

For Berkeley alumni, “Oft as we can, we’ll come back again”, is more than a line from the school song, but a statement of commitment, freely given. The school deeply appreciates the support of our alumni.

All students are encouraged to continue to dream, believe and achieve.
