Zuhrah is a talented and promising upcoming artist.

Deidre Shakir, Zuhrah’s mother, said: “Zuhrah has been drawing since about the age of 3 when she was given her first easel.

“One day she asked Dad to draw a horse for her and realised that she could draw it better. It was clear that she was a natural and we encouraged her daily to freely use her natural gifts.

“We often found walls and furniture decorated with her new designs.”

Young Observer took the opportunity to get up close and personal with Zuhrah to learn more about her artwork and plans for the future.

Tell us a bit more about school. What are your favourite subjects?

“My favourite subjects are maths, science, English and social studies. I really love all my subjects and enjoy learning; I just do my best always.

“I attend Lighthouse Christian Academy. We start at 9am with two 15-minute breaks. We work until 1pm. Sometimes we do art projects.

“Our first one this year was decorating a flower pot. We will be planting something in them next week. I really love home school, I think that it is awesome and I like my teacher, Ms Tammy a lot.”

Where do you get your ideas from for your designs?

“I get most of my ideas from my love of animals and nature. I surf the internet and watch other artists draw and learn styles and designs from them. I register on art sites in order that I can receive tips and constructive criticism on my art.”

We understand you are going to feature some of your designs on T-shirts; tell us a bit more about where this idea came from and your plans?

“When I started home school, my teacher suggested that my art be placed on T-shirts and my parents agreed.

“I plan to sell some at the market and hope to make a fair amount of money so that I can place my art on other apparel, not just T-shirts.”

Do you plan to set up a business and sell the T- Shirts?

“Yes and I am going to set up a website soon in order to sell my apparel. If anyone would like to make a special order, I can be reached by e-mailing bermudaonion@ibl.bm.”

What are your career aspirations?

“I would like to do illustrations for books, take care of animals and be an artist.”
