Bermuda High School staff and students dressed up as their favourite fictional characters to celebrate World Book Day on Tuesday.

In Primary, teachers in each year did group costumes — for example, Year 5 teachers dressed from the Little Miss series, and Year 6 teachers were three of the 101 Dalmatians!

Each class celebrated books in different ways. Year 4 students wrote book reports on T-shirts and Year 6 students created posters of their favourite books.

In Secondary, an assembly was presented by the English department in the morning.

Head of English Mr Dmitri Haas spoke about the power of stories and how it is a basic human instinct in life to tell and share stories.

He invited students to imagine a world without them. “Stories make life beautiful and interesting and that’s why we’re celebrating World Book Day today,” he said.

Secondary students voted in the Battle of the Books which was started in January.

Middle school students chose I Will Always Write Back by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda with Liz Welch as their winner and Secondary students chose The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas as their overall winner.

BHS will celebrate their second Annual Book Fair at Brown & Co, starting next week, from May 2 to 5. All customers who buy a book for the BHS library will receive 20 per cent off their Bookmart purchases.
