Spithill spies room for improvement

Jimmy Spithill, the Oracle Team USA skipper, has played down his team’s flying start to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers.

Oracle top the pecking order after two days of exciting racing on the Great Sound with an impressive 4-1 record.

However, Spithill emphasised at yesterday’s post-race press conference that his team are far from the finished article, despite having established themselves as the early front-runner.

“We are still definitely not satisfied with how we are sailing out there, me included after today,” said Spithill, the youngest skipper to win the America’s Cup.

“It was a day where it was really easy to make mistakes, which we made quite a lot of them, especially early on in the first two starts. “

Oracle started yesterday tied at the top of the points standings with Land Rover BAR, but managed to grasp pole position outright despite making a series of errors on the racecourse.

“We still feel there’s a lot of development on the table for the boat,” Spithill added.

“We don’t have any races tomorrow [today] and so it’s really going to give us a pretty nice opportunity before going into the second round to have a good look at all of the data and footage and try and make a few steps. We certainly hold ourselves to high standards like the rest of the guys.

“We just have to really make sure we take the lessons and move forward.”

While Oracle’s spot in the final is guaranteed, there is still something at stake for the team. The Qualifiers hold the promise of a bonus point in the America’s Cup Match should Oracle top the standings at the end of the double round-robin series.
