One of our wonderful traditions here in Bermuda during the Easter holiday period is the making and flying of beautifully and lovingly made kites.

All of us have warm memories of Good Friday, surrounded by family eating homemade codfish cakes with hot cross buns and hearing the hum of the multitude of stained glass coloured kites backlit by the sun.

Thanks to Garn Fubler, Artemis Racing will now have a kite of their own to fly on Good Friday.

Mr Fubler is a skilled kite maker who as a young boy in Hamilton Parish was taught the craft of making traditional Bermuda kites along with his brothers.

“I love making kites of all sizes for family, friends and clients and when I was invited to make a kite for Team Artemis I felt honoured — the colours of the Swedish flag possess that desired stained glass look,” Mr Fubler said.

This was all made possible by an anonymous donor who came forward to commission Mr Fubler to create the kite incorporating the Swedish colours.

This week Mr Fubler had the opportunity to present the kite to Iain Percy, the Artemis Racing team manager. Percy was delighted to receive the special gift.

“Having Artemis Racing and all the other America’s Cup teams on our island is shifting how we see the sport of sailing, our island and our waters,” Mr Fubler said. “We thank them all for their many contributions to Bermuda. Gifting this traditional Bermuda kite is a pleasure and I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to make it.”

Mr Fubler’s Bermudian hospitality and generosity is one reason why Bermuda is the proud host of the 35th America’s Cup.
