Keep horses off streets between noon and 3 p.m. ? SPCA

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has called on its membership encouraging them to lobby MPs in an effort to improve the lives of horses used in the local carriage industry. SPCA president Heather Kromer underscored the Society?s ongoing battles with the Corporations of Hamilton and St. George?s.

Horses continue to suffer despite meetings and promises.

The SPCA has battled for years with both Corporations to provide shelter for the horses, ban carriage owners from operating during the hottest times of the day during summer and rush-hour traffic and enforcement of the law pertaining to overall hours of use and passenger loads. Media awareness officer Chris Wilcox said the SPCA did not want to prevent carriage horses working on the streets of Hamilton and St. George?s, but would like to see a ban in place between noon and 3 p.m. from May 1 to September 30.
