‘Investigation’ after cruise ship strikes port
An investigation and structural assessment are taking place to assess the damage caused by a cruise ship that made contact with the port in Dockyard last month.
It is understood that a section of Heritage Wharf moved a matter of inches, while damage was also caused to a pipe below the surface, when the Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas struck upon its arrival to Bermuda on September 14.
The Ministry of Public Works confirmed the incident, involving the 339-metre long vessel, which has a tonnage of 154,000 and is a frequent visitor to the island.
A spokeswoman said: “An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Ministry of Public Works is carrying out a structural assessment of the berth to determine the extent of any damage.
“Currently, there is no impact to shipping operations and vessel movements continue as normal.”
