The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held its annual Dog Wash on Saturday to raise funds for the charity.

The first customers lined up at 9 a.m. to ensure their pups would be pampered and cleaned.

More than 30 volunteers cleaned, massaged and groomed the dogs. Rose Powell, chairman of the special events committee, said the volunteers were having as much fun as the dogs, with many of them staying on long past their two hour shifts.

Volunteer Lori Rye was busy giving Fran Kempe's dog Dudley, the royal treatment when The Royal Gazette arrived. Fran said her husband often calls their dog 'King Dudley' because he is so well treated. She was very pleased with the event and said: "This is a wonderful event, Dudley thinks he's at Willowstream [Fairmont Southampton Princess's spa."

The price for a dog wash ranged from $10 to $20 depending on the size of the animal and the volunteers guessed that they had washed over 50 dogs.

Ms Powell thanked all the volunteers and customers for coming out to support the SPCA and St. Paul's Church for allowing them to use the field free of charge.
