Iconic jazz club Hubie’s is re-opening this week to put “the heart and soul” back into Bermuda’s live music scene.Former customer Wanda Bremar has purchased the venue on Angle Street, Hamilton, because she missed the “musical moments” so much. The venue is to re-open under the new name of The Loft at Hubie’s less than a year after it closed. Ms Bremar is passionate about keeping the local music scene alive and is promising live music seven nights a week “with all genres covered.”This will include Hubie’s former house band, Spirit. Complimentary transport from Hamilton and the West End is also being provided to encourage residents and tourists to “live local.”The late Hubie Brown and his wife Molly operated Hubie’s for more than two decades as it played host to numerous local and foreign artists. The jazz club closed in the summer of last year and PLP MP Dale Butler then made a full-length movie about the jazz club called ‘Chilled & Shaken: The Closing of Hubie’s.’Ms Bremar is no stranger to the music scene having run The Loft on Somerset Road, Somerset until it closed in 2001.She said: “I missed The Loft and Hubie’s, but most of all I missed live music. I was feeling very sad so I decided to do something about it.“It’s going to be a combination of The Loft and Hubie’s. A lot of hard work has been involved but I’m just really ecstatic that it’s all come together.“Everyone’s really excited and I’ve had a lot of interest from local musicians, they all want to be involved.“It’s going to be a great atmosphere where people can listen to live music and make new friends.”Musical genres from reggae to rock and everything inbetween will be featured as local musicians take to the stage to try to get everyone dancing. The opening line-up will be James Richardson and friends on Sundays, Leslie Stowe and friends on Mondays, rock band Bad Current on Tuesdays, Sia Spence and Lovette Smith and friends on Wednesdays, Atlantic Music Group on Thursdays, Spirit on Fridays and Howard Rego and friends on Saturdays. There will also be appearances by Hindsight, a group featuring Rupert and Stefan Hinds and Loretta Augustus, who have recently returned to the island having worked on the cruise ships.Ms Bremar said with interested musicians already on the waiting list, they would be changing the weekly line-up every six months. She said: “I think music is the soul of this country.“If you don’t celebrate the local music you lose the heart and soul of a country. Everyone has a favourite song, it doesn’t matter if my song is not the same as someone else’s song, music needs to be celebrated.“It’s all about making the most of local live entertainment and enjoying living local.”It has taken about three weeks of working around the clock to “fix up” the venue with new fixtures, fittings and furniture.Ms Bremar says there will always be a “special place” for Mrs Brown and she hopes the former owner will visit the venue regularly. The Loft at Hubie’s will open sometime this week with the grand opening taking place on Good Friday. It comes nine months after Wendell ‘Shine’ Hayward opened Shine’s as a live music venue on Reid Street and just a month after Bootsie’s Comedy Club on Front Street closed its doors.Neville Darrell will be the musical director at The Loft at Hubie’s. He plays violin, saxophone and sings as part of the Atlantic Music Group. He is also a music teacher at the Berkeley Institute.Mr Darrell said: “It’s going to be a mecca of local entertainers. You’re really going to be able to reach out and feel the music.“It’s going to be like the re-birth of a musical landmark and we’ll make sure it remains a landmark in the future.”Mr Butler, who lives opposite the venue on Angle Street, is the proud owner of its first membership card.He said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic it’s re-opening.“Hubie’s was a gem of a live music spot and I’m sure it will be once again. I just hope Bermudians will come out and support their own live music scene.“We’ve lost Bootsie’s but we’ve gained Hubie’s.“It’s a shame it couldn’t have been a seamless transition without the venue having to close, but it’s great news all the same.”The Loft at Hubie’s will be open seven nights a week from 6pm until 10pm. Entry will be $10, including a complimentary drink. However, it can only serve herbal teas, coffee and soda until it obtains a liquor licence.Complimentary transport will be available during opening hours from the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel and the Hamilton Ferry Terminal, as well as from several West End hotels. The venue eventually hopes to open for breakfast from 8am to 10am and for lunch from midday to 2pm.For more information on the new venue email Wanda Bremar on theloftbermuda[AT]northrock.bm
