Carifta Games hopefuls have a weekend to remember

Action from the Onion Series meet at the National Sports Centre on Saturday

Bermuda’s track and field athletes had a weekend to remember both locally and abroad as they put the finishing touches on their Carifta Games preparations.Alison Outerbridge, Tristan Joynes and Ashley Berry all had successful weekends overseas, with the trio all competing at invitationals.Outerbridge, competing in the Sea Ray Invitational in Tennessee, placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.67, while Joynes ,competing in the Purdue Invitational finished eighth in the 110m hurdles in 15.53 seconds.Berry, competing in the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina ran the 1600m in a time of 4:52.92 in her preparation towards the Games.Locally, at Saturday’s Onion Series Meet, there were several personal best times ran by a host of athletes including Dage Minors, Zakiyyah Showers, and Tyra Stovell.Stovell had a personal best of 24.82 in the 200mf, while Showers ran the 3000 metres in 10:54.64 Minors ran the 3000m in 9:36.94, whilst –Victoria Clarke (25.08) also ran a personal best in the 200m.Rachel Fox (59.33) and Azaire Smith running (1:0.18) broke their own best times in the 400m, while Kyrah Scraders continued her good form in the 1500m (4:556.94).There were some good results from senior ahtletes as well with Tyrone Smith opening his outdoor season with a leap of 7.98, good enough for third at the Mt Sac RelaysTre Houston, competing at the same event, placed 22 out of 48 runners in the 100m with a time of 10.90, and 16 out of 44 in the 200m in a time of 21.58Two more athletes also qualified for the Island Games, with Gary Simons making the grade in the 1500m and Stephen Allen qualifying in the 5000m.
