Cann’s heroics win game

St David’s, 116 for five, beat –St George’s, 111 for seven, by five runsSt David’s edged closer to the Premier Division title with a narrow win over East End neighbours St George’s yesterday. In a game reduced to 22 overs a side Lionel Cann once again proved to be his team’s match winner, only this time it was with the ball and not the bat.St George’s looked like pulling off a shock win until Cann bowled Clay Smith (30) with the home side within touching distance of the win they needed to keep the title race alive.Defeat would have been tough on St David’s, who had a four-and-half hour rain delay break up their innings.Stefan Kelly scored 31 before the rain came with St David’s 77 for three off 18 overs.Delyone Borden (12) and Loren Marshall (10) got St David’s to three figures, but when St George’s made it to 78 for three off just 13 overs, there seemed like being only one winner.Oronde Bascome (37) put his side in control early, but St David’s aren’t league leaders for nothing, and battled back to win at the death. The outcome might have been different had St George’s had a full team, but Christian Burgess, Mishael Paynter, Macai Simmons and Clay Darrell were all missing through suspension.
