Simmons happy to be Carshalton’s ‘super-sub’

Angelo Simmons is hoping to become Carshalton Athletic’s ‘super-sub’ when they kick off their opening match of the season this weekend.

The 24-year-old is likely to start on the bench when Carshalton travel to Canvey Island on Saturday, and is anxious to make his first team debut for the English non-league side.

Having spent the end of last season on trial at the Isthmian Premier League outfit, Simmons feels he’s ready to hit the ground running and is confident of making a telling contribution. “I hope to be involved in some capacity, but obviously it’s up to the manager to make that decision,” said the Boulevard winger.

“As far as I’m aware I should be in the squad, although probably on the bench, and hopefully I can help in any way,” said Simmons.

“It would feel great to get some action; I’m just going to do my best.

“Your first game is always your biggest chance to impress and you need to make a good first impression.

“We have some good players in the side, some former professionals from Arsenal and Chelsea, so it’s a good team and I’m pleased to be involved.”

Simmons has only signed a one-month deal with the semi-professional club, so not to complicate matters should he attract the interests of a bigger team.

But, should that not happen, he said he was more than happy to put pen-to-paper on a permanent deal with the Robins.

“It’s been good so far, I’ve played a couple of pre-season games and I’m looking to get some action and help the team if called upon,” said Simmons, who spent the summer training with top local coaches Andrew Bascome and Kenny Thompson to maintain his fitness.

“I’ve signed some papers with them but they’re trying to see if a bigger club would have a look at me. Right now I’m just trying to do my part and hopefully I may get a chance at a bigger club.

“But if things don’t work out by the end of the month I will put pen-to-paper and be an official Carshalton player.

“I’m not rushing into anything and I’m just happy to be given this chance; if I don’t get signed I will be here for the season.”

Ex-Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical director Derek Broadley recommended Simmons to London-based Carshalton, who are managed by Paul Dipre.

Simmons, who featured for Bermuda Hogges this summer in the Premier Development League, will be hoping to be named in Bermuda’s World Cup qualifying squad.

n Bermuda international Nahki Wells came on as a second half sub in Bradford City’s 2-1 defeat against Aldershot over the weekend. Wells replaced Mark Stewart after 74 minutes.

National team goalkeeper Freddy Hall was an unused sub in Northampton’s 0-0 draw against Accrington Stanley, also on Saturday.
