Bobby DeCosta and Chris Wells were all smiles yesterday after winning the Round the Island powerboat race to take line honours in their D-13 boat.Graeme Sutherland and McNeil Wilson in the D-25 boat came second, while Tonka Simpson and Seth Chetty, in FB-55, rounded out the top three in the same spot they finished last year. For DeCosta it was his first win in the annual spectacle, while co-pilot Wells claimed his second title after teaming up with Sutherland in 2008 in this year's winning boat the D13 Mercendes-BenzWith the smaller boats starting the course before the bigger crafts, DeCosta and Wells had to make up time on those in front while also holding of the their closest rivals in the rear.“It was a day for fast racing, we broke the record in our class, which we owned previously when we broke the record in 2006, by two minutes, so overall it was a good day for the team,” said Well.“Obviously the weather and current and things like that play a big role in how you race, and it was a bit bumpy out there on South Shore but we stayed inside the reef and this helped us to overtake a lot of guys.“Our boat is always fast if we stay on the inside so we stuck to the gameplan and in the end we got a first in class and first overall so we are happy.“Heading out our strategy was pretty simple: come back to Ferry Reach first, and also safe.“Our strategy was good, we pushed out and if you keep to what you know you will be in the runnings.“We stuck to what we know and with it being low tide we had to look out for reefs and things of that nature but it worked out for us so no complaints.”Only the top three could be confirmed in order with protests ongoing between drivers and officials. Race director Ernie Mello said he is investigating those protests.“It was a great day out there, everyone had a great time but the results couldn't be confirmed due to ongoing protests by a few boats,” said Mello.“The day went off without a hitch, and I would like to thank both the officials and the respective authorities that came out to help make the day safe and exciting.”Click here for more pictures
