Bermuda’s drive for new affordable homes has moved into its second phase of delivery, Zane DeSilva, the Minister of Housing, told the House of Assembly.

Mr DeSilva said the projects “represent more than the development of land — they represent an investment in Bermuda's people, our communities and our future”.

He explained that Phase One of the Housing Infrastructure Projects Programme had been launched with several developments at various stages.

Mr DeSilva said his ministry, in partnership with the Bermuda Housing Corporation and the Bermuda Land Management Corporation, was advancing phase two with “the identification and assessment of additional sites for future housing development”.

Sites under consideration include Maria Hill, Sandys; Tudor Hill, Southampton; Ocean View, Warwick; Ewing Street in Hamilton; and Harbourview in St David's.

They are already within the property portfolios of the BHC and BLMC.

Mr DeSilva said they were earmarked based on their potential to expand housing stock while “supporting the broader objective of increasing access to affordable housing”.

He added that Maria Hill, Tudor Hill and Ewing Street could be developed primarily as affordable rental housing opportunities, while Ocean View and Harbourview were being contemplated for a homeownership development.

Mr DeSilva said community input would “continue to play an important role” and said a public meeting was being planned for August, in which “these sites, and potentially others under consideration, will be discussed”.

“The meeting will provide an opportunity for residents to share their views and raise any concerns so they can be considered as early as possible in the process.”
