New Atlantic Media’s Go Explore Bermuda picked up the Technology Innovation Award for the Best Local Mobile Application at the annual Tech Awards 2011.

Despite stiff competition from the Department of Tourism and other applications, the company which comes under the Ultra Concepts Group of Companies (UCG) won the coveted award at the event held at the Bermuda Underwater Institute.

Other winners announced last Thursday included The Centre on Philanthropy and Island Restaurant Group, the Bermuda Monetary Authority, Belco, AlexandraMosher.com, Bernews, Pat Callender of the Ministry of Education, Bermydeals and Bermuda Financial Network.

Business Development Minister Patrice Minors, who presented the awards, said: “The TechAwards represent the pinnacle of achievement for the use of technology in Bermuda. It is important that we identify and publicise these achievements so that Bermuda obtains credit for its successes. The awards also motivate and encourage development of the sector through academic, industry and charitable pursuits.”

Go Explore Bermuda enables users to find all the exciting attractions, restaurants, hotels, and beaches across the Island with access to local events, discounts and general information such as bus and ferry schedules.

They can also explore and learn about Bermuda with video, audio, photos, and GPS navigation, while easy-to-follow directions guide users to their destination in the shortest possible time.

The application is a free location based multimedia electronic tour guide application compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and android operating smartphones and tablet devices.

Soft launched in May, to date the application has been used more than 11,500 times to access tours, attractions, and information about Bermudian businesses.
